where i'm working this summer!

many of you know, i have a job for a week or two in maine in july, cooking at a yoga/pilates retreat. i'm excited about this, but it also means i have to cook lobster, which...is not something i've ever done. should be tragic, interesting, and hopefully successful, all at once.

i just wanted to share the link with you. if you know anyone who's interested in attending, feel free to pass the link on! should be a great time. the property sits by the lake and is really lovely, apparently.

you care about my nose.

should i get it repierced?
i had to take it out awhile ago because i thought it was infected.
i don't think it was, but i couldn't get it back in, and i've almost gone to get it redone a couple of times but haven't really gotten around to it yet.

i think it was a good look. if you have anything to say on the matter, or should you want to accompany me to to repiercing ceremony, do let me know. i probably could use the motivation.

i think i liked it because it made me look 'cool.' this is what living among brooklyn hipsters does to you. if you don't have a unique haircut, tattoo/s, piercing/s, or accessories, you're not cool enough. so fine. i want to be a little cooler. i want to have 'edge'. and i don't want a tattoo. so if a small extra hole in my nose makes me look a little more edgy-sexy, well then so be it.

bush's appeal to the black people

click on the title link above for more photos!

normally, i would never post photos of george w. because i think he is repulsive to look at, but this is kind of funny, and i have a blog which someone other than me reads, hyptothetically. so this is the space in which to present this, i presume. i just wish i could have witnessed it first hand. and i wonder what was going on in his mind. "this will really appeal to african-american voters"? "yeehaw! this is some good ganja!"? or "this dance means i can't get the malaria. come on laura! dance with me!"?
special thanks to jason for the head's up.

enjoy the ride.

food i made.

part of the reason i started this blog was so that i would have motivation to document and record more of the food i make. because i often just make up recipes and they're pretty good, and i'm also trying to get into the habit of photographing more of my food. maybe someone will happen to read these and ask me for the recipe, or prod me to take more photos.

so here's something i made yesterday. didn't take a photo, but here's the info.

Vegetable Enchiladas w/Spicy Chipotle-Tomato Sauce:
Organic Yellow Corn Tortillas
Sauteed Swiss Chard w/Garlic
Broiled Zucchini w/garlic and oregano
Broiled Sweet Potatoes w/garlic, cumin, and cilantro
Broiled Chayote and Red Peppers w/coriander and thyme
Caramelized Onions

Chipotle-Tomato Sauce:
1 Yellow Onion + Garlic + Thyme + Cumin + 1-2 Chopped Chipotle in Adobo + 1 Large Can Diced Fire Roasted Tomatoes + chopped Cilantro
Puree half of it, stir, and pour all on top of enchiladas
I should have made twice as much. or at least 50% more. The enchiladas could have used a bit more saucy lovin'.

Also made: Avocado-Pineapple-Hearts of Palm Chunky Salsa
w/halved grape tomatoes, diced red onion, chopped cilantro, salt, fresh lime juice
could have also added more onion or minced jalepeno to make the heat factor more exciting.
this would go great with fish or grilled chicken. also good with chips and enchiladas.

this is a possibility

i wrote this a few weeks ago for a women's networking group i've been participating in. it was one of our 'assignments'. it's one possible view on what the next couple of years could look like for me. maybe in a bit i'll post an alternative view.

It seemed like only days ago, Aja was beginning to piece together plans for this trip. But here she is, two years later, getting the last of her immunization shots, moving her belongings to storage, and running last minute errands, because at the end of the week, she’s headed to the airport to begin the journey she’s been dreaming about for years!

The past year, especially, has been a busy one—researching, emailing people all over the world, taking courses in cheese-making, and gaining some practical experience (a month working at the Farm Sanctuary upstate, another month interning at an organic farm in Vermont), but this is merely the beginning.

To start things off, she’s headed first to Texas to work on her mom’s ranch for a couple of weeks, helping her with her organic garden and enjoying herself, riding horses around the property, and then she and her family will head off to Southern California for her brother’s college graduation. From L.A., she’s off to Hawaii to work as a chef at a yoga retreat center for a month. She’ll continue on to revisit Fiji for fun and pleasure, then travel New Zealand and Australia, picking up working along the way if she can. Heading north, to Thailand, she will stay with friends, take cooking lessons, and eat to her heart’s content!

Her travels in Asia continue to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Bali. Aja then does a 2 week trek through the mountains in Nepal. Next, she heads to India, studies yoga, cooks at another retreat, and learns traditional Aruveydic cooking technique.

Aja’s journey takes her next through Europe—with special food focuses in Italy, Greece, and France where she works in organic farms, olive groves, and vineyards. Backpacking through the highlights of Western Europe she meets other travelers, eats at amazing restaurants, and has an outstanding time!

She heads back to New York—it’s been a bit over a year. Here she regroups, works for a few months, and before she knows it, has head back out for a South American adventure: Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Trinidad, Brazil. In these countries she works with non-profit organizations to help create more sustainable agriculture in various communities, picks up some great food ideas, and heads back to New York soon after she recovers from Carnival.

Throughout her travels she has been photographing and documenting, filling up notebook after notebook—her mom’s pleads to write a book ringing in her head. Upon her return she begins to compile her ideas, edit her photographs, and piece together recipes—she’s not sure what it will be yet, but it’s the beginning of something great.

Meanwhile, the money she invested before her trip has made a killing. That, and she’s found some great investors for her sandwich shop. She’s barely had time to unpack her bags before things start coming together with the shop faster than she can imagine and the doors to the shop open by the end of the year.

Since she’s been back, people keep asking Aja what her next adventure will be, especially now that she’s seen so much! “There’s always the North and South Poles,” she says.

dont you hate it when...?

i've taken to reading craigslist's 'missed connections' a couple of times a week.
they're amusing and make me feel better about my love life, or lack thereof.

i did a quick perusal this evening, and here's my favorite.

enjoy!

audiobooks.

so audiobooks, right?
i can't say i've just 'discovered' them or anything. but i am taking advantage of the harry potter IV audiobook. i can accomplish more while listening to the book i'm currently reading! i can shop, walk around town, do work on my computer, clean my room, and then when i'm done with my multi-tasking, i can quiet harry potter, and watch a movie, or actually read a different book.
it's pretty amazing.

except for how much audiobooks cost. so much more than an actual book, but i suppose not too much more than an undiscounted hardback. luckily, i pay nothing because i download them illegally from the internet, but at least i use the tools available to me. well, not everything is so easily available illegally, but i do the best i can.

you can't make notes in an audiobook though, or so easily flip back a page, but it's a wannabe book nerd/multi-tasker's dream.

does anyone have the 'omnivore's dilemma' audiobook mp3? becaue i have to try to read at least most of it by the 23rd. and reading under pressure doesn't suit me.

2am musings. as is usual.

there are a fair amount of thoughts floating around in my head in any given moment.
right now is no exception. at the risk of sounding over-dramatic, i feel as though i'm at this weird moment in time where paths have presented themselves in many different directions. almost as if i am standing at an octopus-like crossroads. there have been some paths i have decided against, but the a few others lay open, beckoning. i suppose there are many moments in life like these, so i'll just go with the flow and follow my heart.

there's austin, there's work, there's nyc, there's none of these.
work means money and that is always an attractive option so long as the conditions are right. and i think at this point, since i am still building a business for myself as well as working to gain as much experience as possible, the more diversified work i can get the better.

but there are also many other attractive features luring me to other options.
i think part of me wants to make a rushed decision, though i know it'd be better for me to just ride it out, and see what's left after the emotional sieve has done it's work and all that's left is no-nonsense silt.

...it's been awhile since i've been up this late and didn't have to get up early in the morning.

the gabfest

for those of you who don't know but may be interested... my friend kaitlyn and i have started a feminist discussion group.
for now, it's entitled 'the feminist gabfest', but that's just for the time being.
it's totally casual and not scary or anything like that.
we just wanted an opportunity to discuss feminist issues in a relaxed and intellectual circle.

our first meeting is this sunday at 6pm @ phoebe's cafe and i'm psyched!
the website for the group is: http://groups.google.com/group/gabfest

let me know if you're interested!

yee-haw 2008.

should i move to austin?
i'm thinking about it.

pros and cons will be listed at some point in the future when i am more focused and sure that i'm considering it for real.

i need a new camera

i probably have a dozen cameras.
okay, that's a slight exaggeration. i have [counting]...more like 7 or 8.
but i think my non-slr digital needs replacing.

i'd prefer a camera that takes xD cards because i have two of those.
i enjoy olympus cameras, but i am willing to take recommendations from the audience.
megapixels is not the biggest concern because most good cameras are at about 7 or 8 megapixels now, even the small ones, but i'd like something that has good resolution, shoots well in dark situations, and has a decent range of slr-like functions (being able to adjust f-stops, and things like that).

if anyone has anything they would like to recommend or steer clear from, let me know.
i'll be doing my own research eventually.

getting started...but when did i stop?

i need a bit of a kick in the ass.
not necessarily because i need to 'get things done,' but more because i want to accomplish more of the things that don't need to be done, because i don't want to lose sight of those things that make me, me.
photography, writing, creating, etc. i'm not lost. i just need a jump start.

i haven't picked up a camera with purposeful intent in...well, longer than i can remember (drunken self-portraits not included). and that displeases me. i am a good photographer, i enjoy the camera, and i'd like to be doing more with that.

i used to journal all the time. now, thanks to technological convenience, i am able to write almost as fast as i can think, so i haven't kept a journal but instead subject my friends to sappy/emotionally charged/incoherent emails (and soon possibly this blog). i mean, i have a journal right now that is 2.5 years old. i used to fill up a journal in at least third of that time!

the namesake of this blog refers to the index cards sitting on the wall above my desk. many of you have seen them, commented, etc. they are my to-do lists, wish-lists, think-lists. i rewrite them from time to time even when it's not necessary just to remind me what it is that i want to do and achieve, and to add new things to the lists.

so i don't know what i hope to achieve directly from this blog, but i think it's going to turn into a more detailed, electronic version of those index cards on the wall (recipes, musings, wanderings, photos, etc.). so you can read it or not, but i'd like to think you'd read it from time to time, and give me some additional kicks in the ass as needed.

thank you.
